About The Observatory

The Metaphor Observatory scopes out today’s metaphors to understand where we are and where we’re headed, taking our time to write for those who love language. We also publish the annual Top Ten Metaphors List, observing the most popular metaphors in the media. We are one person speaking on behalf of trillions of his human cells, each with a microscopic voice.

The Metaphor Observatory is an attempt to informally document metaphor in contemporary international media. While our scope covers all forms of media, the primary focus is on the broadest, most popular media. For this reason, one can expect more from television, cinema, the press and the Internet, which offer the widest bandwidth of metaphor to the broadest audience. Though we do not differentiate between say, visual, auditory or spoken metaphor, we must acknowledge the ease at which spoken metaphor spreads across society, language and culture. If a tree falls in the forest, we probably won’t sound off about until it speaks for itself.
